Network
Concept

  • Define network

A group of two or more computers linked/connected together by a communication link in order to exchange resources

  • What are the three criteria necessary for an effective and efficient network
  1. Performance
  2. Reliability
  3. Security

  • Name of the factors that affect the performance of a network
  1. The number of users
  2. The type of transmission medium
  3. Capabilities of the connected hardware
  4. Efficiency of the software used

  • Name the factors that affect the security of a network
  1. Unauthorized access
  2. Viruses

  • Explain the term PROTOCOL as used in data communication

A protocol is a set ofrules that govern data communications. It defines what is communicated, how it is communicated, and when itis communicated.

  • Give the key elements of protocol
  1. Syntax
  2. Semantics
  3. Timing

  • Define line configuration and give its types

The way two or more communication devices attach to a link

  • Define topology and mention the types of topologies

Topology is the way in which a network is laid out.

  • The types of topologies are:
  1. Mesh
  2. Star
  3. Bus
  4. Ring

  • Define hub

A networking device that connects multiple computers or computer devices together.

  • Give an advantage of each type of network topology

Mesh– The dedicated point-to-point connection between two devices guarantees that each connection can carry its own data load hence eliminating traffic problems that can occur when links must be shared by multiple devices.

Star– When one link in a star topology fails, only that link is affected and all others remain active.

Bus– It is easy to install compared to other topologies.

Ring– It is easy to install and resources can be easily shared amongst the devices in the network.

  • Define transmission mode and its types

It defines the direction of signal flow between twolinked devices

Types:

  1. Simplex
  2. Half duplex
  3. Full duplex

  • What is LAN?

(Large Area Network) A high-speed data network that covers a relatively small geographic area, eg, between buildings

  • What is WAN?

(Wide Area Network) Communications network that spans a large geographic area such as across cities, states or countries.

  • What is MAN?

(Metropolitan Area Network) A network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large LAN but smaller than the area covered by WAN.
