DESIGN OF AN AUTOMATIC POWER FACTOR IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM WITH AN ADDITION OF HARMONIC FILTER FOR MTIBWA SUGAR ESTAT

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The low power factor problem at Mtibwa Sugar Estate is caused by the use of inductive loads and the presence of harmonics produced by the non-linear loads in distribution power system. These harmonics significantly reduce the life of capacitor banks and cause low PF. This increases current flow, power losses increase in both distribution and transmission lines. Thus, this results in financial losses to the industry.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project is divided into two parts, the main objective and the specific objectives.

Main Objective

To design of an Automatic Power Factor improvement system with addition of Harmonic Filter for Mtibwa Sugar Estate

Specific Objectives

  •  To assess the existing power factor correction system at Mtibwa     Sugar Estate
  •  To design a control circuit system for improving the power factor
  •  To select appropriate components and materials for the designed system
  •  To build the prototype of the proposed system
  •  To test a Prototype of the proposed system
